Crown and cervical portion of the root were discarded by a transverse section situated 3mm, apically, from the cemento-enamel junction on the buccal surface, thus obtaining the root specimen. On root dentin, mean micro hardness values were obtained for 3 regions: (DR1) from 0.05 to 0.1 mm of the cemento dentin junction – 30.64 VHN; (DR2) from 0.3 to 0.5 mm of the cemento dentin junction – 56.92 VHN and (DR3) from 0.8 to 1.0 mm of the cemento dentin junction – 32.70 VHN. After statistical analysis (Variance Analysis test, p < 0,05), we conclude that micro hardness at the DR2 region was statistically greater than that at the DR3 region which was, in turn, greater than that at the DR1 region. The mean micro hardness of cementum was 19.70 VHN.

The inorganic components of cementum- and enamel-related dentin in the rat incisor.

Recently, we have shown that, in rodent incisors, the crown- and root-analogue dentin (enamel- and cementum-related dentin) show differences in mineralization rates (Beertsen and Niehof, 1986) and composition of the organic matrices (Steinfort et al., 1989). It was the aim of the present study to determine whether these differences were accompanied by differences in the inorganic components. Ra...

Structure, chemical composition and mechanical properties of human and rat cementum and its interface with root dentin.

This work seeks to establish comparisons of the physical properties of rat and human cementum, root dentin and their interface, including the cementum-dentin junction (CDJ), as a basis for future studies of the entire periodontal complex using rats as animal models. In this study the structure, site-specific chemical composition and mechanical properties of cementum and its interface with root ...

Durability of adhesion between 4-META/MMA-TBB resin and cementum.

4-META/MMA-TBB resin has shown good biocompatibility and remarkable adhesion to dentin. It seems to be suitable for use in periodontal tissues for retrograde root sealing and treatment of vertically fractured roots. For an adhesive resin to be useful clinically, it must bond not only to the dentin but also to the cementum. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term adhesion durabil...

Characterization of crocodile teeth: correlation of composition, microstructure, and hardness.

Structure and composition of teeth of the saltwater crocodile Crocodylus porosus were characterized by several high-resolution analytical techniques. X-ray diffraction in combination with elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed that the mineral phase of the teeth is a carbonated calcium-deficient nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite in all three tooth-constituting tissues: Dentin, enamel,...
